You can use onyx.nixcom.ca for ping/traceroute test. The actual server is dual-core i3-540 with 8GB memory and RAID1. Low end desktop grade stuff but very good bang for the buck. It is a very good deal though which I think might be below cost. So it is a loss leader to gain market share and available in very limited amount.

Reason for the promotion is because they have some servers with full disk but free RAM. Servers are in Germany and from their Datacenters page they are in “Falkenstein, Saxony and Frankfurt am Main”. Their website is hosted in Hetzner though. Xen would be PV in this case, and HVM would be a $2 extra (which would be over our $7/month threshold).

Via this WHT offer. CityNetHost looks like the hosting arm of CityNet Telcom in Egypt, so it’s more likely to have telcom/network infrastructure in place. It is currently offering an Xen VPS special at $24/year, which comes with

Servers are in Egypt so it might be a very good location for some of us here (not me though, almost 400ms ping). It looks like they have just branched into selling VPS as the ordering pages are still very dedicated-server-centric. I wonder whether you can really buy a $2/month VPS and hook it up with a 320GB SATA drive at $10/month extra, as it is available in the option.
Having the entire telcom company’s 2 name servers on the same network is indeed a bit strange though.

I guess it is rightful to call it the limited edition as the resource is indeed a bit, hmm, limited. However 96MB can still do wonders depending on what you are trying to achieve. You are also getting Xen rather than OpenVZ that’s more common at this ~$3/month price range. There has not been much discussions on their offers in the past though. Servers with Hetzner in Germany. Last time Alex claimed that they have been in business for 3.5 years and have 2 technical employees. .DE WHOIS does not show the creation date although DomainTools shows the earliest record at 4 years ago.

According to their network page, the servers are with Colo4Dallas in Texas, while their website is in Los Angeles. The test IP however gets around 60%+ packet loss when I tried to ping it — not too sure what’s going on there.
The “company” itself started in 2010 — in fact the domain was only registered last month, with WHOIS protection turned on. While there does not seem to be a way to know who are the people behind the company, I do trace it to an IP address in El Salvador.

Domain has been registered for a month to a New York based company “Neutrino Networks”. Although their servers are in NY their website is at WebFaction in Houston TX. In the email, Dylan also left a signature that says “Neutrino AB” — which indicates that it might be a Swedish company.
